I have a 3GS with the new bootrom (MC...) and it was never jailbreaked. iOS4 is installed. How can I unlock this iphone? A "downgrade" with PWnage to OS 3.x dosen´t work. iTunes said, that this is not possible... any ideas or recomendations?
matador - July 30, 2010 at 7:57am
Will anyone be able to help here please......? I am running 3.0.1 firmware on iphone 3GS .... the bootrom is without doubt the old one....... device is jailbroken (redsnow) and unlocked (ultrasnow). I have no access to a Mac computer.... Wish to upgrade to iOS 4.x.x. Supposing I download a custom firmware 4.x.x (not official apple firmware), can I upgrade and jb/unlock successfully? thanks in advance for your help.... :)
qutecpye - August 5, 2010 at 11:13am
I am in the same boat as you are, I have a 3gs running 3.1.2 firmware (unlocked and jb via blacksn0w, old bootroom ) and no access to Mac either so if you find anything would you please let me know. Thank you very much in advance:)

iPhone friends, i have a iPhone 3gs running 4.0 (8A293) with bootloader 05.13.04 and old bootrom. Previously i was running jailbroken 3.0 (not spirit) but accidently updated to 4.0 trough iTunes. I'm aware of the importance of saving the shsh files (didnt did that on 3.0) but can i still request my old shsh files with Umbrella? Because when i'm using umbrella it says that it saved iPhone3gs 4.0.1 shsh files. Does that means that i can downgrade to 3.1.2 or upgrade to 4.0.1 and jailbreak with pwnagetool? Most likely it should be for 4.0.1 but i just want to know for sure!! Many thanks! Grtz Bria
Adlin - July 26, 2010 at 5:52am
When I jailbreak, after loading the custom firmware, would I need to activate the phone?
Linda - July 27, 2010 at 12:04pm
You need to Jailbreak first, then you need to Unlock to use another carrier. If you already have an AT&T contract with an iPhone, then it should still work without unlocking. The Jailbreak and Unlock are two different software hacks.
james - July 23, 2010 at 3:18am
I have a 3gs old bootroom, but the previous owner jbd with spirit. What can I do to upgrade to 4.0? Thanks
Ridell - July 27, 2010 at 5:09am
Hey, You can upgrade, no problem. But you can't jailbreak it. I don't know why, just that it doesn't work. I am in the same situation and I got errors all the time so I decided to downgrade to 3.1.3 again and hope for a JB also for us old Spirit users. Can someone perhaps explain what is different in a Spirit jailbroken phone compared with a Pwnage jailbroken phone? I always used Pwnage before but a friend showed Spirit and it was so simple so I used it. Shoulnd't have done that when all comes around. I miss 4.0. I liked it.

Any further word on us old Spirit jailbreakers for iSO4?

Sorry if this is known, I could not find any info. Are there any plans for a 3GS tool for Windows. I'm still on 3.0.1 on my old bootrom 3GS. and would like to get on 4.x soon. I would imagine redsnow would be the tool, but have not found any news about it. Who/Where should I follow to keep upto date for this. Thx.

Hi there, I'm about to send my iPhone 3gs back to my service provider to repair/replace my iPhone due to dust under the screen. I'm currently using iOS4 with modemfirmware 04.26.08, jailbroken with PwnageTool. I have SHSHs on file in Cydia. I don't use any unlock tool. Probably silly question but do I have to unjailbreak my iPhone so I get iOS4 with the new firmware before I send it to the repair shop? Is it possible to unjailbreak it and keep my current firmware? Do I need my old firmware in the future? And if i update via itunes and get the latest update and firmware can I jailbreak it when I get it back? Thanks in advance

Serious Guys can somebody answer my question I´m on iOS4.0 Have the old bootroom and its 3gs. Can u jailbreak it with this Tutorail because I´m getting Error 1604. Or do u have 2 be on 3.1.3 firmware and of course not jailbroken with spirit.
saczko - July 18, 2010 at 3:40pm
the same problem, help us!
00Ice - July 20, 2010 at 3:28pm
Short answer is no, sorry. In the same boat here because you need to have the shsh blobs saved from 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 to downgrade and then jailbreak and then use this tutorial to upgrade. If this doesnt make sense google it or dont bother until @comex finishes the spirit 4.0 jailbreak
ghamks0v - August 13, 2010 at 3:47am
00Ice, I have the shsh blobs saved from 3.1.2 and I recently upgrdaed to 4.0 Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.0] but I keep getting the Error 1604 what to do ? Please advise
Paul - July 14, 2010 at 1:32pm
Hello there, I don't know where I'm wrong. I've got a 3gs with old bootrom ***928***** and MC132. f0recast also says it is jailbreakable. I had it actually jailbroken under 3.1.2 and then I upgraded via itunes 9.2 to 4.0. Now I'm trying to jailbreak this. I don't have my SHSH keys saved on cydia. So I used Pwnage 4.0.1 to create a custom image since I have an old bootrom. On the restore I get the marvelous 1604 error... and now I need to retore with apple's ipsw.... what is wrong? why can't I jailbreak the 3gs even though everything says I should? Does anybody have an idea? Cheers, P.
Tarush - July 14, 2010 at 11:43pm
i'm getting the same error. Have been trying things out for quite some time now. I'll let you know if i find something..... and you please let me know if you do. The sad thing is, I don't have an official sim so i'm more or less without a phone now. :(

geckx7 - July 13, 2010 at 3:51pm
Yes, anytime you reinstall the OS you are going to wipe the phone in the proccess. back it up via itunes then when you are done unlocking SYNC your phone. do not restore from backup

Hi, I have a 3GS old bootROM with IOS 4.0, I don't know if it 's ever been jailbroken, I got it in that state. Is it required that the 3GS had already been jailbroken ??? I tried to follow this tutorial but it always fails. Thanks Best regards

Can i use pwnagetool 4.01 to add cydia to a already activated iphone 3gs w/ iOs4???
Feffe - July 6, 2010 at 2:01pm
HI, Info for everybody how receive the "Error 1600" message. After trying to use this guide with all the right equirements i was stuck with the "error 1600", no matter how many times i tried. After reading on some other site the differens between DFU mode and Recovery mode i realized that i was putting my iphone in DFU mode. Trying to put it in Recovery mode solved the problem, no error message. So, i quick guide how to put it in recovery mode is to hold the power button and then slide the red arrow to shut it off. Then you release the powerbutton and instead hold the home button until the graphic of shows. (Blank screen = DFU mode) (Graphic screen = Recovery mode). I hope this can help someone how is stuck.
HP - July 10, 2010 at 12:06am
Thanks a lot. It works.
Tarush - July 14, 2010 at 11:41pm
I've been trying the recovery mode for quite some time now, but i still can't seem to get past the error. Anything that you tried? I'm on 3GS 4.0 and wanna unlock and jailbreak it. Please help.
Mad - August 4, 2010 at 1:43pm
Thanks, worked for me. If you want to change from DFU to Recovery Mode. For me it worked to plug the USB Cable into the iPhone 3GS and pushed the Power and Home Button. Then the graphical Symbol appeared on the iPhone screen and the iPhone turned into the recovery mode.

Hi folks, I tried to follow your instructions for jailbreaking my currently jailbroken 3GS 3.1.2, serial number 889258AW3NS phone, and downloaded the ispw. However, when I try to use pwnage tool and select the ispw i just downloaded (iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore), it tells me wrong firmware selected. Any thoughts/tips would be greatly appreciated.
asaadsaleh - July 6, 2010 at 3:18am
Hi seems all is ok and should work normally, are you sure the file you downloaded is not corrupted? check its file size, this might be the issue!
Dejan - July 6, 2010 at 1:13am
For all those who get error 1604 or any other 16xx error, best solution is to downgrade to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 and wait for new jailbreak for 4.0. Downgrade is possible! follow the link bellow. There are video instructions on youtube as well. http://www.blogsdna.com/9175/how-to-downgrade-iphone-3g-4-0-os-to-3-1-3-firmware-on-windows-mac.htm When downgraded, use blackra1n to install Cydia, and then use the following instructions to unlock https://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253 Good luck!
D - July 8, 2010 at 10:32am
But remember guys this will only work for 3G not 3GS. Don't try it if you have 3GS or your might brick your phone. 3GS Users, stay tuned for an upcoming comex release that will JB all ios4 devices (aside from the iPhone 4)
Dejan - July 8, 2010 at 1:00pm
actually the downgrade worked for my 3Gs
D - July 8, 2010 at 1:03pm
REALLY?! The tutorial specifically says 3G. Hmmm.. Okay, im gonna try it and report back guys!

When is the same coming for windows and new bootrom?
Hmarkvitz - July 5, 2010 at 1:01am
Hi, I have a Apple Iphone 3GS that has the old bootroom and was never jailbroken until the other day when I decided to. It was already in firmware 3.1.3 I decided to use Spirit to jailbreak cause it looked like the easiest way. My baseband is 05.12.01 and I double checked it is the old bootrom and I bought the phone when it came out. Can I do this jailbreak or not, cause what if I restore to 3.1.3, then use the pwnagetool for 3.1.3. and then do the same for version 4?

nihonjin - July 3, 2010 at 2:44am
My sim for the 3GS (04.26.08) is already disabled because I'm already using my iPhone 4. My friend wants to use my 3GS iPhone with Rogers/Fido in Canada. In this case how can I do that? Should I still leave the disabled at&t sim in it when I update it to iOS4? Obviously I can't activate the phone because my sim doesn't work, so I'm not sure if I can update the 3GS to iOS4 here before I give it to my friend. Otherwise, he just has to restore it with the custom .ipsw file and his active Rogers/Fido sim in, right?

I have a dumb question. Am I supposed to upgrade to iOS4 before I go through this tutorial? I have a 3GS(from Japan) which I Jailbroke with Blackra1n. I updated iTunes to 9.2 and followed the tutorial. But it was not able to restore and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode. Should I restore to iOS4 in iTunes and THEN do a restore from the custom ipsw? I'm clueless. I've been using a T-Mobile sim. Should I take it out before I do all this? Thanks for any help

pls people u have to read slowly & wisely & when posting a problem make sure u give all the info, in your case do u know what bootrom is ur 3GS ??? u say it's jailbroken ! right , so if u shut down ur phone for a second & turn it back on do u have to plug again & run blackrain to make it boot or it starts back to springboard with no prob. if u had to run balckrain to start ur phone this means u have the new bootrom & u can't upgrade to 4.0 yet !!!! with this tutorial or any other for the moment, for now if ur stuck on recovery , just keep holding power & home button until u see the logo then when the cable is on screen, just plugg it & run blackrain AGAIN , done
3GSuser - July 2, 2010 at 4:08am
this must look at your bootrom, if new btrom not for this moment, old btrom can be jailbreak using pwnage tool.when u make the custom f/w, restore with iTunes 9.2,this is the step 1.connect iphone to your pc then turn it off and open itunes. 2(If stuck at connect to itunes).press the power and home button together for 10 sec, without release home button and hold for 10 sec.(screen will not show anythings but in itunes will detect your iphone) 3.start to restore your iphone 3gs with the custom f/w that u make from pwnage tool HOPE this will help you but for me no....because my 3gs in new bootrom..i have wait for almost four month when the 3.1.3 release

Oh yeah also after creating ur custom firmware and to enter recovery mode turn off ur iphone completely then while pushing the home button plug ur usb cable and wait till u see the cable on screen then start itunes if it doesnt start automaticaly & do the restore,, N.B: i was on 3.1.2 JB & unlocked with the Blackrain rc3
Zev - June 29, 2010 at 12:52pm
Yeah, this definitely was a good JB. 24hrs after the JB and no problems except for a few Winterboard and other compatibility issues. If you're doubting doing this, DO it. iOS 4.0 is NICE.

hey i see you all got yours done im not getting mine to work i get an error when restoring the custom firmware any tips or ides as to why ? Thanks Ryan
Zev - June 29, 2010 at 1:13pm
If you're sure you fit all the requirements for this tutorial, I would make sure you're on iTunes 9.2. Also, with me at least, I had to try to [alt/option+RESTORE] three times before it actually worked. Is your iPhone screen doing a weird 'flash' when you hit restore? If so, I'd just try again, but double check your eligibility for this tutorial.

dude its 1AM in the morning where i live now , i'm sure u have some issues in ur iphone try to stay on ur old software & not upgrade to 4.0 now if u already upgraded with itunes , u have to downgrade just do that following the tutorial in iclarified if u had ur shsh on file u will be able to do it automaticaly when u follow the instruction, then use the old pwnge tool to create a custom firmware 3.1.2 and restore with itunes N.B : do this first : https://iClarified.com/7556 then do this: https://iClarified.com/5432 then go for ultrasn0w unlock if u want goodluck

Hey having issues with my custom firmware when trying to restore with it i get errors any idea how to fix?
Zev - June 28, 2010 at 3:34pm
So, this worked. But several notes should be made: iPhone 3GS 16gb- was running 3.0 previously jb'ed with redsn0w, MAC OSX 10.6.3, FIRST, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Half of the replies to this are asking redundant questions! SECOND, iTunes 9.0 will not work. An update to 9.2 had to be applied first! THIRD, it took THREE attempts to get the CUSTOM FIRMWARE to flash onto the iPhone. The first attempts yielded error 1 and 1600. FOURTH, after the JB took place, it was on the Emergency screen. This was because I shut off my internet connection during the JB. You need to turn it back on to boot fully into the operable 4.0 OS because it needs to verify your service. I'll check back for further questions.
meek - July 2, 2010 at 5:21pm
HI, I have a 3.0 jailbroken iphone 3gs, I always get the 1600 error. I upgraded to 9.2 and still get the 1600 error. I'm not sure what you meant by going into emergency mode, how do I do that and I assume I should turn off my internet connect? Thanks a lot for your help.
ben - June 28, 2010 at 3:22pm
ok guys, if you want to avoid error 1604, downgrade (if shshs files are backed up on cydia) ios 4 to 3.1.2 using this tut : http://www.redmondpie.com/downgrade-ios-4-iphone-3gs-3g-and-ipod-touch-to-iphone-3.1.3-3.1.2-how-to-guide/ Then you need to jailbreak your 3.1.2 firmware, then just restore with alt + restore in itunes 9.2 and select iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Custom_Restore.ipsw (iphone 3GS file created with pwnage tool 4.0.1)
Axwell - June 28, 2010 at 3:58am
I've got a 3Gs running 3.1.3 on the old bootrom, however I jailbroke it with spirit. Will I still be able to restore to a custom ipsw or do i need to restore it first to 3.1.3 and then do a custom restore? Best A
kolbaszmen - June 28, 2010 at 4:18am
First need you restore to 3.1.2, and then do a custom restore with sn0wbreeze 1.6.1
Axwell - June 28, 2010 at 5:19am
But if I build a custom ipsw 4.0 with pwnage tool, and restore to 3.1.2, couldn't I just restore to my custom 4.0 with itunes? Is sn0wbreeze compatible with 4.0??
kolbaszmen - June 28, 2010 at 6:29am
yes compatible see tooljail! very good
Axwell - June 28, 2010 at 6:00pm
Thank you, I will try! Best
