Can iPhone Duo Replace an iPad mini? Here's What to Consider
iPhone Duo could give you one less device to carry. Its 7.6-inch inner screen has room for a book, a movie, or two apps side by side—the sort of things many people keep an iPad mini around for.

Whether it can replace yours depends on how you use it. The current A17 Pro iPad mini has a larger screen, iPad apps, and Apple Pencil Pro support. It is also a much cheaper way to add a tablet to a phone you already own.
A Larger Screen or a Better Display?
The iPad mini's 8.3-inch display gives a page, drawing, or game more room than Duo's 7.6-inch inner screen. If you reach for your mini because reading on a phone feels cramped, that extra space still counts.
Duo has the more advanced panel: OLED rather than LCD, ProMotion up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling, and a nano-texture finish to cut glare. It is also brighter, reaching 1,000 nits in typical use and up to 3,000 nits outdoors, compared with the mini's 500-nit rating.
When you only need to answer a message or make a call, Duo's 5.4-inch outer screen lets you leave it folded. You can open the larger display when you need it, without reaching for another device.

Reading and Watching Video
Reading and video are the easiest reasons to leave the mini at home. Having a larger screen already in your pocket could be especially useful on a train ride or while waiting for an appointment.
Netflix has adapted its app for Duo's inner and outer screens, and the partially folded phone can prop itself up for hands-free viewing. With a separate iPad, though, you can keep a video playing while using your phone for something else.
That independence matters at home, too. An iPad can stay open to a recipe in the kitchen or go to someone else on the sofa while your phone stays with you.

Duo Runs iOS, Not iPadOS
Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 and Split View, which puts two apps side by side. You can browse beside your notes, open two Safari windows, or save a pair of apps to return to later.
Your apps may be the bigger deciding factor. The mini runs iPadOS, with tablet apps that can differ substantially from their iPhone versions. If you depend on an iPad-only drawing or music app, you will still need an iPad to run it.
Apple's own apps are adapted for Duo, along with third-party apps including Netflix, Zoom, and Slack. Developers can tailor their interfaces to the unfolded screen using Apple's new layout guidance.

The Mini Has the Pencil Advantage
The iPad mini works with both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), with hover support for each. Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity for drawing and a squeeze gesture to bring up tools.
Duo is getting Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on both screens later in 2026; Apple has not promised it for launch. Pencil Pro is not supported.
For occasional notes and document markup, the USB-C Pencil may be enough once support arrives. For someone who draws regularly with Pencil Pro, the mini remains the more capable choice.

Less to Carry, More to Spend
At 254 grams, Duo weighs less than the iPad mini alone: 293 grams for Wi-Fi or 297 grams for cellular. It folds down to 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm. The mini is thinner at 6.3 mm, but you will usually need a bag or a larger pocket for it.
The price difference is harder to overlook. Apple currently charges $599 for the 128GB Wi-Fi mini or $749 for cellular, while Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB. If you are happy with your phone, adding a mini costs far less than replacing it with Duo.
Before buying the current mini, consider the timing: a new OLED model is reportedly due in late October or November. Apple has not announced it, but if your purchase can wait a few weeks, it is worth seeing what arrives.
A cellular mini gives you mobile data, but it does not replace your phone's cellular calling. Duo handles both. For wired accessories and file transfers, both devices have USB-C with speeds up to 10Gb/s.
Apple rates Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback on its inner screen, versus up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or video on the mini. Those ratings come from different tests, so they cannot tell us how much longer one would last under the same workload.

Can You Leave the iPad Behind?
If your mini is mostly for books, streaming, and browsing, Duo could make it redundant. That is the strongest reason to consider the foldable: the larger screen goes everywhere your phone does.
For Pencil Pro drawing, iPad-only apps, or a screen you can use alongside your phone, the mini still has a place. Duo can take over some tablet tasks without replacing everything a separate iPad lets you do.
Duo pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23. For current mini offers, check the iClarified iPad Price Tracker, including the 128GB Wi-Fi model.
