Apple Tests Microphones and a Remote Speaker for New Apple TV [Report]

Apple has tested built-in microphones for its next Apple TV and a speaker for an updated Siri Remote, according to Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.

Microphones in the set-top box would let users issue Siri commands directly, without speaking into the remote or relying on a paired HomePod. The remote's speaker would make it easier to find when misplaced, including between couch cushions.

It is unclear whether either feature will be included in the shipping hardware.

The new box is expected to use a standard A19 chip to power Siri AI. Leaked Apple files have already shown a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K with the same external design as the current model, though earlier code left open the possibility of an A19 Pro chip.

The streaming box and refreshed HomePod mini are expected to be introduced at the October 13 'Welcome home' launch and ship to customers and stores on October 30.

For the smaller speaker, the main hardware change is an S10 chip supporting Siri AI. The new color lineup will include pink, white, green, blue, and midnight, with pink and green finishes already visible in leaked Apple artwork.

The HomePod mini will extend voice control and music playback throughout the house alongside Apple's new HomeView display. That hub is said to offer better sound quality than the mini and is currently expected to reach customers in mid-November.
