RipDev Installer Beta 8 and Kate Updates

RipDev Installer Beta 8 and Kate Updates

Posted September 25, 2008 at 11:04am by iClarified
RipDev has provided some details on the latest Installer 4.0b8 and a future Kate release.

-----
Apologies for being so silent over the past weeks. There are no real excuses, other than being totally swamped with various work on all fronts that we've been doing... and hopefully you'll be able to see them soon.

Now, what's new?

Installer 4.0b8 is out (it's been ready for a while and even included in the last PwnageTool but we were holding off to releasing it publically). Among notable features is the switch to libcurl from the stock Foundation URL loading classes, which means more lightweight CPU and memory footprint and, more importantly, resumable file transfers. The new beta also features a plethora of little fixes which we won't extensively list here. Enjoy. We'll be pushing out a 4.0 release soonish...

The featured page you see when you launch Installer is actually automatically generated based on the popularity of the packages (based on the number of installations across the board), so it's nothing like the "old" featured page that listed a set of pre-defined products. It will eventually have some "sponsored" products, but they will be easily distinguishable visually and we'll try to keep the amount of these to the minimum - no more than 3.

Community Sources are updated as well to reflect the change in the modmyi.com domain name and to remove some outdated sources that shown promise but actually never delivered anything.

Kate update been out for a while, and we're finally at adding new features to it - so look for a non-bugfix release in the near future.

If you're a software publisher and would like to be hosted in Installer - please let us know and we'll do all the work for creating proper install scripts and hosting on our server (which has a few spare terabytes of bandwidth).

Moreover, thank you for staying with us and supporting us along the way - it couldn't been done without you!

installer started to suck once nullriver sold it. sorry ripdev, i love the work u do, but functionality is by far more important than a flashy GUI. specially the icon streaming is annoying as hell. can u add in an icon.cache or something? or maybe only have icons in the app page not on the list....

And now the community sources divert into: paid and commercials lead by RipDev.cs and free and graceful lead by DevTeam, Saurik, Bigboss, cs

Forget about installer. Cydia is the king of the 2.0 firmware. Unless you want to pay for Kate (yes it isn't free) or the 5 or 6 other apps you need to pay for...give Installer the heave ho on your next Pwnage update.

Cydia gets minor patches / fixes almost weekly - Install 4.0 is very spotty, if the last time you tried it was WAY back at 2.0.0 then the difference should be night and day for stability. Cydia now has better application / theme previews. Cydia doesn't lockup or slow down when scrolling because it is streaming the icons like installer does. The ONLY app that seems to be ONLY available in Cydia now is Kate because it is developed by Ripdev. Installer stopped being king once the 2.0 software came out an Cydia appeared.

How is Installer history??? Cydia is nowhere near as good, have you seen the install/uninstall times on it, I mean, come on, it doesn't take over half an hour to get back to the homescreen with Installer. Installer has been with us since the 1.x.x era. Well if you don't like or want Installer, keep it to yourselves, I don't like Cydia as it has given me the ALOD many times and Installer never did. Installer has a better UI and better installation of times and it will be better than Cydia. Does anyone else get them ridiculous times after installing something from Cydia, you can't go back to the homescreen for at least half an hour, cos Saurik said it's the same with everyone?? I can't check with 2.1 as I uninstalled it back when I was on 2.0, waiting for a stable installer and Cydia is far from being stable.

I have to agree, the next time i update the firmware on my iphone (still on 2.0) i will only include Cydia because i like the idea and the simplicity of Cydia compared with Installer, im not too fussed about the pretty interface it just makes things run wayyyy to slow, and also the idea of power hungry apps on my phone draining the battery is a big turn off for me! So Cydia wins on this occasion.

Goodbye Installer........Cydia is stable on 2.0 and all apps developed on that as for today.
Who is this?

Installer has gone way down hill since the days of 1.x. Cydia rules the 2.0 firmware and I don't know what the point of continuing the work for installer is for.
