Phil Schiller Says iPhone 5 Scratching is 'Normal'

Posted September 25, 2012 at 3:18pm by iClarified
Phil Schiller, SVP of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, has responded to a customers concern about scratching on the iPhone 5, reports 9to5Mac.

Here's the email exchange:

-----
Good day Sir,

I love my Black & Slate iPhone 5, but I've been seeing some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone along with many others. What should we all do? Any plans to fix this?

Thank you,

Alex

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color.
That is normal.

You can check out some scratch tests here. Have you noticed scratching on your device? Would you call it normal?

If you bought a shirt with a hole in it, u need to exchange them. If you bought a blank paper that someone wrote something on it, you exchange them. If you bought a wedding ring that has scratch on it, you return them. If you bought an iphone that has scratch on back, you exchange them. Simple.

Invisible Shield by Zagg has always been my favorite product against scratches with no extra bulk. It been on my iPods, iPhones and iPads. Highly recommend it.

If someone doesnt know that the actual price of the iphone is way lower than the selling price is just ignorant . Its normal for Apple, thats the way they made all those billions.Just ask those ppl at Foxxcon how much they make,or those that actually make those painted aluminum cases . They should have a polycarbonate case/back cover, just like the 920,thats scratch proof (more or less, since its colored all the way inside )

First the iPhone 5's case is not painted. It's anodized. Second, calling polycarbonate scratch proof is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You need to check your facts before posting some bull. Or go work for FOX.

All I have to say is would you buy a Ferrari with scuff marks already on it? I love my iphone 5 because its the fastest phone but had to go through 3 of them at the apple store to find one that didn't have as bad of a scuff mark as the others did. I think the only way to fix this issue at this point is to offer free cases to everyone.

iPhone 5 had type 2 anodizing. While much better than type 1, it is still prone to scratching and chipping. It is also probe to fading from prolonged exposure to the sun (the black version that is) Apple could and should have done type 3 anodizing (AKA hard anodizing) hard anodizing would have been ok for the black version. But the white version would be the deal breaker. You can do clear anodizing in type 1 and type 2 and have the aluminum come out silver color. But if you do clear type 3 anodizing, the aluminum comes out a greenish color.

It's not paint you! It's anodizing! Look it up on your cheap plastic III.

Well first thing. If its scratched out of the box, return it or exchange it. Also it's not paint, it's anodized aluminum and yes if you want, you can scratch it, but at least it's not plastic. I had a tiny ding on the shiny part of the edge of my first one.. I said I wanted another, pointed out the flaw and grabbed another... No problem. With the iphone4, if you scratched the edge it left a shiny mark as well, no different than the iphone5 white. So if you don't want it to show as much I suggest the white 5 or I'll sell you my really scratched up galaxy 3.

http://m.cnet.com/news/iphone-5-say-hello-to-scuffgate/57518019 Check the link and FIND THE FACTS...i wonder how you guys follow the apple products!? IClarified is not the only souce which provides the news about apple. Do follow others and find THE FACT like this one plenty of other sites like techcrunch, msnmoney and gizmodo.. Its only iClarified which never reported this issue..not only this but even regarding wifi, lights, keyboard lines and stuff too with new iPhone 5.

No it's not. You can scratch it with another diamond.

A lot of people towing Apple's line in these comments. The main problem here is that the iPhone 5 scratches MUCH (as in 100%) more easily than the iPhone 4 and 4s. That indicates a problem as it should be the opposite with newer phones.

of course its normal. didn't you have scratches on the metal frame on your 4 and 4s? everybody who says this is a manufacturing problem, should change his world-view. ipad gets scratches on the back. macbook get scratches. and i'm a huge iphone and apple fan and love my products. :-)

I've had my 4S since the day it was released, had no bumper on it and it has no scratches. But if the 5 is anything like the ipod touches then im staying well clear. it makes the product look cheap and tatty. Anybody who recommends covering the iphone 5 with a case is nuts, why have a design that will be covered up?? well unless the case is identical to the design of the iphone 5

b. - September 25, 2012 at 3:57pm
yep - mine too. but i know a lot of people where the frame has scratches and almost no people who treat their iphone like me. and not 5 million iphone 5 users are complaining about scratches, but those who hear "iphone is the best phone", believe it, drop it, it gets scratched and then complain about it. if you got scratches on yours, your fault. period.

Bullshit, Phil is trying to act Steve jobs like he said "hold it other way or you are holding it wrong", if you are spraying poor paint without any proper adhesives, you will lose it even with continuous touch of hands, pretty disappointing, im not upgrading to iPhone 6. Ill wait for 7, still have 4s can work well for 2 more years.

lol...... exactly the answer i got from one of our suppliers from china when they shipped us scratched alloy tubes for highclass cnc made rc helicopters. but that happened a decade ago and it was a small chinese 100 employees company. seems apple buys from em :)
