only thing is, these all seem to use the apples webview / webkit engine so basically they are the same as mobile safari , only with a different gui. so firefox / opera are still as unlikely as before.

Yes, unfortunately they are WebKit-based.
I doubt were going to see anything like Firefox, Opera or IE anytime soon.
