A Chinese woman nearly lost her eyesight after her iPhone 5 exploded in her hand, sending debris into her eye, reports ZDNet.
According to a report published by Da Lian Evening News on Friday, the injured woman whose family name is Li arrived at her workplace and was on the phone with her friend when she felt the screen growing very warm against her cheek. At that time, she had been on the phone for 40 minutes. When she looked at the device to check it, Li then discovered the touchscreen was not responding when she tried to end the call. After a few more tries, the screen exploded. Li said she felt some debris shooting into her eyes. "I could not open my eyes," she recalled. Her colleagues rushed her to the hospital where the doctor found her eyeball red and inflamed, and identified a scratch mark which suggested an object had scratched it.
Notably, Li had previously dropped her iPhone on the top right corner leaving a small dent. This is the same corner the explosion appears to have originated from.
Apple customer service told Da Lian Evening News that such incidents require an investigation but it would not likely be covered under warranty.
There is just nothing in that corner inside that phone that could explode - hence this story is BS. Even that picture shows no sign of an explosion. And why would anybody need to be on the phone for 40 mins nonstop anyway -duh
If she's dropped it on that corner, she will have damaged the shutter on the camera on the other side, which will begin to over-heat, whether that would cause it to "explode" is highly unlikely however.
All lithium ion batteries can and do blow up if they over heat. The iphone and iPad have a over heat sensor that is supposed to shut the battery off at 130 deg F. If this is damaged the battery can blow up. Also if the phone was replaced with a non oem battery it could create an overheat problem.
no iphone should be released without remotely triggered pricm explosion feature activated. just read thoroughly cupertino license agreement about nukes in particular. obviously there was some radioactive trace in her workplace
Well, its weird. my iphone shut itself when it gets hot. with a warning massage on screen.
happen sometimes when using the map.
and its not at the point to explode but get hot and then the black screen with message.
It's likely a battery problem, as the batteries sometimes break down, overhead and expand, breaking the phones. It's rare that one 'explodes', but certainly isn't unknown. Picking up a hot phone to see why it's growing in size isn't the best option!
