GeoHot has managed to decrypt the RAMDisk for the iPhone 3GS and has posted the key.
Once the vfdecrypt key is found it will be possible to use the key with the 'vfdecrypt' tool to decrypt the main filesystem DMG found in the .ipsw file.

What does this mean?
1. We are now one step closer towards JAILBREAKING the iPhone 3GS
2. It would help us create the custom firmware (bypass baseband updates, install Cydia, etc) for the 3GS
3. The soft unlock for the iPhone 3G (Ultrasn0w) can now be tested on the 3GS. If the same vulnerability exists in the 3GS baseband too, the payload injection could successfully unlock the iPhone 3GS too.

Wow. You people are retarded! This only means we are getting closer to seeing the contents of the .DMG files found inside an .IPSW. Once that happens, then we can begin to unlock the iPhone ysyem software. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with unlocking the modem to use with t-mobile for example. That will come much later for the 3Gs.

You ask when do they think its gonna be finnished? They just announced that the key has been decrypted! Im sure just like everything else, there will be problems that arent expected, and other workarounds have to be found, so when you see that the Unlock is available for the 3Gs, then its ready! Dont be a moron.

What you don't seem to understand is that people here don't know everything that's involved in jailbreaking and are trying to find out information about it by asking questions. You seem to think this makes them retarded, but really the people who know this stuff (and are doing it) are friggin' brilliant.
Anyway, the question which I don't think you understood was, previously when we got to this point, how long before jailbreaking tools were released to the public? If you have insight into this, it would be helpful...either a guestimated timeline, or discussion of the remaining obstacles involved.
I'm by no means an expert on this, but from what I recollect with previous iPhone jailbreak solutions is that we're roughly a couple of weeks or more away. After that, from what I've heard the unlock solution could be ready to go as soon as the jailbreak is because the 3GS shares the same baseband as the 3G.
