Hello,
- Are there any known problems with iTunes 8.2.1?
- Should a SIM-Card be in inserted when applying the jailbreak?
- Should I do the jailbreak with the original SIM-Card or with the one I want to use?
Thx

Jailbreak with no Sim card in it, and then after unlocking with ultrasn0w, turn the 3g off first, then drop the sim card in the phone. The phone needs to "hacktivate" and the AT&T sim card screws that up.

Quick question. After I finished hacking my phone and connect to iTunes do I select "Restore from the back up of "My Phone"? Or do I have to use "Set up as a new iPhone"

If you've gotten through step 11 above and have cydia, then you'll want to restore from your last backup. RedSn0w has done the firmware patch, and restoring from the backup will not change that.

That actually isn't true. I have restored from a back up, and everytime it screws up my JB. I have to set up as a "new phone" and then just sync and all is fine.
I have NEVER had a JB successfully work after a restore from last backup.

I need some advice!!! I've been trying to jailbreak from mac, but I just can't. At first I tried using my own restore of the 3.0 OS but redsn0w didn't work, then I tried using the downloadable version in this tutorial but when I follow the instructions, and the process says: rebooting, redsn0w shuts down, the problem message appears and my iPhone restars normally as if anything had happened. Any clue?

If anyone is having trouble downloading the firmware pack, and it keeps coming up as a folder, use Firefox to download it instead of Safari. Safari will keep making it a .zip file, and when the extractor runs, it turns it into a folder. Firefox will just download it as the .ipsw file.

I do not have the iPhone yet that I want to jailbreak, but I have been reading this forum and downloading the files ahead of time. On the link to download the firmware 3.0, I get a bunch of disk images that require passwords to mount them? By the way, the iPhone I am getting already has the 3.0 firmware on it, so do I need to get it again to jailbreak the iPhone?

when you download the ispw file from the link above
when it downloads it'll be saved as .ispw.zip
when its finished you need to change it by right clicking, get info, change the file name to just rename it so it just has .ispw at the end
and the iphone will have 3.0 on it, the ispw is needed to jailbreak, and is good to have in case you ever need to restore for any reason

I plan on jailbreaking/unlocking an iPhone 3g (I don't have it yet). I hear a lot about putting in another Sim card such as a Tmobile or AT&T Pay as You Go, but how do you get one of those Sim cards if you don't have one? Can I just go into an AT&T store and ask to buy a Sim card?

Well you're going to need to get a service plan either prepaid or whatever. When you do that, they will provide you a SIM card.

I can tell you that I bought the iPhone 3GS from AT&T with service contract and all. I then activated it through AT&T. Then I did the jailbreak and unlock, and then I bought a tmobile prepaid SIM. Removed my AT&T SIM, replaced it with the Tmobile one and I was able to activate that SIM no problem on my unlocked iphone. I then swapped the AT&T SIM back in, no problem.
I don't know if there are any gotchas if you get your iphone from somewhere other than AT&T.

I am trying to Redsn0w my 3Gs, but when I download the IPSW file, my mac unzips it and it isn't the cube that the program can recognize, it like unpacks it and stuff. How to I get the file to download the way it shows in the tutorial.
Please advise!

I think I read somewhere else that this can often be browser related. i downloaded mine with firefox. Are you perhaps using safari?

when you download it, it'll say file.ipsw.zip
or whatever
after downloads to the folder you put it in
right click, get info, change the name so its just .ispw at the end
and it'll work

I'm happy to report that this worked very nicely for me. This is my first iPhone and I wanted to jailbreak and unlock so that I could use my iphone when I travel. So far so good, the jailbreak went flawlessly, app store works, browser, compass, wireless, 3G all looks good so far. And just to help clarify for fellow newbies, redsn0w is just patching so if you have a brand new iPhone3GS then you are already running 3.0 and you don't have to do the first restore from within iTunes (although familiarizing yourself with restore is not a bad idea in general, and it will prompt you to create a backup. which is good for safekeeping) although you will still need to download the .ipsw file for redsn0w to use. You won't lose anything currently on your springboard, when all is said and done, it's just as if you installed a new app (cydia). Wish me luck on Ultrasn0w.

So far I haven't noticed a negative impact on the 3GS speed. But even if jailbreak would slow down the 3GS a little, the possibility to install Cydia applications and customize your iPhone the way you want is a major plus in the "Jailbreak Pros" column.

well right now im still debating on jail breaking mine. i backed everything up when i do decide to do it though.
im just concerned that it'll start to run slower. like slower respond times between opening apps, etc. when i did it with my touch it became really laggy. especially when i'd move my apps around on my home screen.
i like how the 3Gs is really smooth with opening/closing apps, and switching across each home screen on the springboard.
i just wanna make sure it doesn't get laggy or anything.

Yea my iphone 3Gs is a little slower than normel, but i downloaded winterbored from cydia and i have noticed my iphone overheating due to the process of Ram that is in use to run winterbored so yes if u have winterbored it will run slower.

if you are with an official carrier in your country, I would restore my iPhone from a iTunes backup, then reapply redsn0w. You didn't need to restore your iPhone 3GS since it comes with 3.0 already, it's clearly specified in the tutorial.

I've tried several times to jailbreak it and everything went well until the reboot. When it gets to the reboot part, the iphone stays with a black image. I waited several minutes (about 10) and nothing happened so I turned the phone on manually, but no Cydia anywhere. Cancelled the reboot and tried again but same thing keeps happening.
I tried just installing cydia - nothing happened.
tried just installing icy - nothing happened.
What am I doing wrong???? Somebody please help

Profecia...I was using the wrong .ipsw file. Instead of iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw you need iPhone2,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. Download the correct one from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6582.20090617.LlI87/iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You said instead of iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw, we need iPhone2,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. But in the link you've supplied, it's 1,2. 2,2 doesn't exist and 1,2 is giving me the same problem as before. :(

well i haven't got the mms yet for my phone but yea i did reinstall the firmware and whats funny is that i didn't register it as a new iphone i restored it to my old one so i do still get video ringtones just not able to go into the app to select videos

I simply followed the entire process exactly...I didn't even reinstall the firmware either since it's clearly mentionned it is not required if you already have 3.0 installed. MMS seems functional (option is still there) even if I haven't tried it, I installed Winterboard which works fine as well.
I'm now playing with my jailbroken iPhone 3GS since 2 days now and the only negative thing I see is some Cydia apps are sometimes crashing (such as xGPS) and the current inability to trick your iPhone to think its using WiFi while its using 3G, so you can use SlingPlayer Mobile, voIP over 3G etc...

In safari click Safari preferences then general tab. UNCHECK open safe files after downloading. Then REDOWNLOAD THE IPSW FILE. DO NOT UNZIP IT! Change the extension on file from .zip to ipsw. It will ask you for confirmation tell it yes. Then you should be all set.

I just went through the process and my phone is sitting with a blank/black screen (still powered up). Instructions say wait about 5 minutes for it to reboot. I've been waiting about 10-15 and still nothing. I guess I have no option but to force reboot...
Rebooting.....apple comes up......goes to blank screen for a few seconds then to my unlock screen. No Cydia.
Guess I'll try again. At least it's not bricked.

If you are using your iPhone 3GS with an official carrier, simply restore from an iTunes backup, then reapply redsn0w. There is no need to download the 3.0 firmware if you have an iPhone 3GS since it's already running 3.0. It's even specified in the tutorial (it could have been put in bold characters, would have been clearer!).
this should do the trick!

So your iPhone 3GS is currently restored to an old backup and is running 3.0, right?
If so, try to use the tutorial by skipping steps 2 and 3 since you are already running 3.0 anyway. I also think you need to leave iTunes opened while you are using redsn0w so your phone enters DFU mode correctly.
This tutorial works flawlessly for me and took 5-10 minutes to complete , there is no reason why it wouldn't work for you on a 3GS.

patrivard - July 10, 2009 at 4:37pm
One thing, you really need to download the 3.0 firmware, as redsn0w needs it to complete the jailbreak, but you don't need to restore using that firmware if you already have 3.0 installed.

If you're having problems with redsn0w hanging on "waiting to reboot" try switching out for a different cord AND USB port. That may help. Cheers and thanks again to the Dev Team and iClarified!

Hi, I have an iphone 3G and followed this tutorial. I was able to jailbreak my iphone successfully. But I am just wondering how i could keep my contacts and notes once i jailbreak. Since you have to restore the Iphone in the first steps i lose all my contacts. Id like to be able to keep my contacts and then get them back after jailbreaking. Resotring the iphone from backup gives me my contacts back but takes away the jailbreak. What do i do?

This is the trick with this tutorial, if you don't have firmware 3.0 already installed and are currently using a 3G jailbroken and unlocked on a 2.x firmware, I guess this is not the best tutorial to use.
Before I purchased my 3GS, I had the first generation iPhone running 2.2, and when I synced the 3GS for the first time, I simply restored using a iTunes backup, and all was OK but the WiFi information regarding known WiFi networks weren't ported from one iPhone to another.
My guess is that if you are using your iPhone 3G with an official carrier, that you haven't unlocked it but only jailbroken it in the past, you could update to 3.0 using itunes then use the "restore" function of iTunes to restore from an old backup. Then, you can use that tutorial, but skip step 2 and 3 this time!
