TomTom for iPhone Released in US App Store [Video]

After being released yesterday in the New Zealand App Store, TomTom turn by turn navigation for iPhone is available in the US App Store.

The application is available in four different versions:

TomTom US & Canada:
- Fully covers the US (including Hawaii and Alaska), Canada, and Puerto Rico
- $99.99

TomTom Western Europe
- Fully covers Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France, Monaco, Italy, San Marino, the Vatican City, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and the Canary Islands.

- Fully covers Australia
- $79.99

TomTom New Zealand
- Fully covers New Zealand

though this might be of interest to some people. I have recently purchase the Western Europe Tom Tom application for the iPhone and I have to say it seems to be very out of date with a lot of POI's missing. I emailed Tom Tom support to ask whether we would be able to update the maps, and they replied by saying in order to get future map updates, AT THIS STAGE, we would have to buy the whole application again. They sure know how to screw their customers, very disappointed. Here is the emai: Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Care The reference number for your query is. If you could please provide me with more information on the POI's and the out of date information that you have noticed? As for updating the Maps, any purchases must be done directly with Apple, I believe in order to update at this stage you will have to repurchase the Tom Tom App. No, there should be no difference between the Western Europe version of UK & ROI and the UK & ROI standalone map. HAS ANYONE TRIED THIS APP ON AN UNLOCKED IPHONE 3G??? I dont want to buy it and have it not work.

Nice video. LOL This guy does not know the difference between an announcement and a release. It was announced a few months ago and release in the past day.

Well since my iPhone 3g (16GB) is unlocked. Will the GPS still work? I use TMobile and so I never get 3G Service and most of the places I go where I would use the GPS I get no Cell Signal. I dont want to spend $99 on something that wont work right.

The maps are built into the app, hence the file size being nearly 1gb in size. All you need is a 3g or a 3gs (because they have a gps unit built in). 2g phones dont have a gps unit built in. Although some map apps work on the 2g (this is due to cell phone tower triangulation) its nowhere as near as accurate as GPS hardware, and thats why they probably didnt bother writing the app for the 2g, cause it would make their program look buggy, and inaccurate.

I have bought and used it in Australia and it is all quite good as stated in the video and very comparable to my built in Nav in my car. The only thing I would like to point out is that you CAN go back to the map while still on a phone call. Just click the home button, and re-launch TomTom. You will then be back at your map with the green "in call" strip above. Hope this helps.
