Apple and HBO are in a bidding war for a new J.J. Abrams sci-fi drama series, reports Variety. The show is said to deal with a world's battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. If made, it would be Abrams' first TV writing project since 'Fringe' in 2008.

Abrams would also executive produce, with Ben Stephenson–head of television for Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions–also serving as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Television would produce. While HBO and Apple are the top contenders for the project, Warner Bros. is said to be open to other bidders.

Apple has been busy putting together a serious lineup of shows. It reportedly ordered ten episodes of 'Home', a docuseries that offers viewers a look inside the world's most extraordinary homes. It's said to be developing a new original drama series entitled, "Are You Sleeping", starring Octavia Spencer. The company has also reached a deal with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and Comcast's NBCUniversal television production unit to make new episodes of 'Amazing Stories', a science fiction and horror anthology series that ran in the 1980s. Apple also won a multiple outlet bidding war for a morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

We're not sure when Apple is planning to debut its lineup of original TV shows but you can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS for updates.
