The iPhone XS Max beats the Samsung Galaxy Note9, Google Pixel 3 XL, and Sony Xperia XZ3 in a new battery test posted to YouTube today by Mrwhosetheboss.

Battery Life drain Test of the Google Pixel 3 XL, new 2018 iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Sony Xperia XZ3! This Battery Life Drain Test will show us which smartphone has the best battery life!

Notably, this test runs the Galaxy Note9 at its full screen resolution of 2960x1440 much higher than the 2220x1080 resolution that Phonebuff used in its test. The Galaxy Note9 easily outlasted the 2688x1242 iPhone XS Max at the lower resolution.

If the two were running the same screen resolution the Galaxy Note9 would likely best the iPhone XS Max in battery life. Note9 owners will have to choose between a lower screen resolution and significantly better battery life or a higher resolution and the corresponding drop in battery life.

You can argue that Samsung has higher res but that’s their choice in the design. They didn’t make higher res so that you’d use a lower res. They expect you to use the higher res...and thus knowingly and purposefully made the battery life as it is.

Yes, a phone with higher res that isn't rated the best smartphone display. Go figure.
