The Connectivity Standards Alliance has released Matter 1.4.2, a new update that strengthens the smart home standard with enhanced security, improved network efficiency, and a new Wi-Fi-only setup option. This release focuses on refining the underlying Matter framework to create a more reliable and secure experience for users.
A key update is a new Wi-Fi-only commissioning process, which will allow devices to be set up on a Matter network without needing a Bluetooth LE radio. For manufacturers, this can reduce hardware costs and complexity. It also means existing Wi-Fi-only products could potentially adopt Matter through a firmware update, expanding the range of compatible devices for users.
Security is also getting a significant upgrade with several new features. Vendor ID Verification lets Matter controllers cryptographically confirm that a device's administrators are genuine, preventing impersonation attacks. Access Restriction Lists for network devices like routers provide a way to limit access to sensitive settings, while new support for Certificate Revocation Lists helps ecosystems flag and block potentially insecure devices from joining a network.
The update also refines how devices communicate. Matter 1.4.2 makes scene support certifiable, which should lead to smoother and more reliable activation of scenes across multiple devices. The release also extends "Quieter Reporting" to more devices, an optimization that reduces unnecessary network traffic to improve battery life and overall responsiveness.
Other core improvements are aimed at streamlining device management. A new Endpoint Unique ID system will prevent duplicate devices from appearing when reconfiguring a smart home, and a standardized process will allow devices to notify controllers of new features gained through firmware updates without requiring a full reset. The update also sets new requirements for network infrastructure devices, ensuring they can handle a growing number of connections.
This release builds on the improvements from Matter 1.4.1, which focused on making device setup easier with features like NFC and multi-device QR codes.
Matter 1.4.2 is a foundational update that maintains full backward compatibility. The Connectivity Standards Alliance notes that Matter 1.5 is planned for later this fall.
