I got stuck in DFU mode (displays connect to iTunes or screen is black) after downgrading from 4.1 to 3.1.2 and got error message 1015. It was a little bit unclear in this article, but you can run your jailbreak tool (e.g. RedSn0w) even if you're stuck in DFU mode.

Tried to downgrade my 3GS on 3.1.3 with Spirit JB to 3.1.2 using my Cydia SHSH blobs to be able to re-jb in order to be able to jb on iOS4, but the restore fails for some odd reason :-/ It runs for a good while after I select the iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw, then stops with a message that says: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)". Anyone with an idea? Many thanks!

Did you just follow the steps posted here? I've tried it a few times & keep getting a message saying the device isn't eligible for requested build, running out of options now, stuck on 3.1.3
VifferKid - March 10, 2010 at 8:27pm
Having the exact same problem! Is this most likely because my device was never registered with cydya and doenst have an SHSH ECID? any help is appreciated.

and btw, my iPhone 3G is upgraded to the latest 3.1.3 - does that mean that if I want to downgrade it to 3.1.2 or unlock/jailbreak at 3.1.3, I need to also downgrade the baseband? Thanks!~

I've done all 7 steps and have had my iPhone 3G (locked AT&T, 3.1.3 version, never been unlocked/jailbroken) in DFU mode. Though iTunes does not allow me to downgrade it back to 3.1.2. I don't have a Mac so I can't use the Pwnage Tool for 3.1.3. Any clue as to what else I should do to downgrade it? Thanks a bunch!

the way you tell if cydia has your hash files is when you sign on to cydia on the top it will say this device has SHSH on file for fimware(s) blah blah blah
Art - February 20, 2010 at 3:38pm
Is the it the same process for Win 7 64 bit? Does any one know? Thanks.

I now have the correct firmware file, I now get the message "iPhone cannot be restored as it is not eligible for requested build", think I'm stuck on 3.1.3 for now as I've tried a few times & this always happens
DonWan - February 20, 2010 at 8:51am
Read steps 4 5 6 and 7.. If u edit the right file and append the right thing, it will not check with apple to see if that's the right firmware.. It will insted check a fake server that will allow u to use the 3.1.2 firmware
Shamanwee - February 22, 2010 at 1:09pm
I had the same issue with Baz Reed....i follow the same thing as step 4 5 6 and 7 but still get the message "iPhone cannot be restored as it is not eligible for requested build"........
DonWan - February 19, 2010 at 9:22am
All those having problems with the firmware file is because it is in .zip format. U must rename the file with .ipsw as the extension.... (so its not a .zip)
alasdair - February 18, 2010 at 12:45pm
have followed all of the steps, including the download to my desktop of the 3.1.2 restore, but when i try and shift restore from i-tunes i can see the folder etc but get a message no items match your search, can anyone help me finnish this please ?

i followed the tutorial for downgrading my 3gs as i had a problem with cydia. Everytime i hold shift then restore the firmware wont open in the folder i saved it in. It doesnt look anything like the firmware on the video tutorial (a cube shape) its just a folder with a zip on. Im using windows vista, any advice would be great thanks
DOnWan - February 15, 2010 at 11:20pm
WORKED !!!!! This is how i did it.. Followed directons 100% got error 1015 at the end.. ran it again, got error 1015 at the end again "phone was still in recovery mode", then i went strait into jailbreaking with blackrain. WOrked fine other than at the end of jailbreaking it froze with buddies picture on the screen, i rebooted phone, connected to itunes, it activated and was jailbroken with cydia in the springboard. This was done on a iphone 3gs(old bootrom). accedentley upgraded to 3.1.3 through itunes. manged to downgrade to 3.1.2 and rejailbreak

what is error 1015? after i restored with the ipsw-file, i got: "the iphone 'iphone' cannot be restored at this time because the iphone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable." what did you do after you ran it again? thanks
metalhead76446 - February 11, 2010 at 11:14pm
ok update if you get error 1015 as i did repeatedly use irebb to kick your phone out of the recovery loop and it will activate through itunes then. of course if yu have updated to 3.1.3 you can not unlock it so its only good if you have service with at&t but i have now downgraded back to 3.1.2 and jailbroke using blackra1n. thank you Saurik for saving my a$$ and thank you Goerge for blackra1n you guys seriously rock the iphone community
metalhead76446 - February 11, 2010 at 10:25pm
downgraded fine but phone wont activate through itunes keeps giving me error 1015 tried restoring twice as describes then jailbreaking. jailbreak works fine but still does not activate phone. what should i do as i dont want 3.1.3 rock does not work with 3.1.3
GR10 - February 9, 2010 at 11:02pm
Hi guys, I accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3, i have the iphone3GS and previosly had 3.1.2 jailbroken with open ssh from cydia, I followed the steps and it keeps giving me error 1015 and I have tried to do it more than 2 times, I think you guys should post a new tread of how to fix this issue, this downgrade option is incomplete....
GR10 - February 16, 2010 at 12:46am
Hey guys, I did worked just the way DONwan described it above, for those who accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3 having iphone 3GS no matter what bootrom you have, it works. Here's what I did. It shows error 1015 no matter how many times you repeat it, after that your phone will still be in recovery mode then run Blackrain and thats it, it will show this guy's picture then it will reboot and bring you to the screen with 3.1.2 firmware. Pretty much everything works so far. will post something later if any issues are found, Good post Don Wan...

hi, everyone, i j/b my 3gs 3.1.2 new bootroom with redsnow 0.9.3 and then unlocked with blacksnow, everything seemed to work fine but mms issue. after inserted all the settings for mms for tmobile(must reboot to have it effected), i rebooted the phone, i got mms but no wifi (the wifi can't detect the wireless networks around). i looked all over the net but no hope, then i found a guide to fix the wifi by resetting the network, after resetting the network(again, must do the reboot to get this to work), the phone rebooted again and wifi is back but mms is gone because all the settings for the mms is clear from the resetting. this really pissed me off, it's like you can ONLY get one of the two because after each reboot one of them will be lost. i think the problem is somehow the wifi and mms just can't get along on the 3gs with new bootrom. i give up now, please help me out..thanks alot
Freddy - February 9, 2010 at 2:13pm
He worked perfectly fine but THE WIFI STOPPED WORKING? Can anyone help me?

It does not work with iPhone 3Gs - Version 3.1.3 (7E18) - Modem Firmware 05.12.01
Ariel - February 9, 2010 at 11:34am
Hi Up the the last step everything is OK. When i hold on SHIFT button and click on the ''restore'' button... it opens a window Is it normal? Do I am suppose to open a file? If so, wich file? And where should it be located? Thank you.
Ali - February 10, 2010 at 10:08am
You're supposed to download the 3.1.2 firmware and put it on your desktop for example. And once you do the shift + restore, it will allow you to select the file, so you navigate to where you installed the file to and select it. and the restore will start...
alasdair - February 18, 2010 at 12:43pm

Edgar - February 7, 2010 at 1:20am
If I wanted to UPGRADE to 3.1.2, would I still have to do this? All I've read is downgrading.
Nathaniel - February 7, 2010 at 1:50am
The best way to upgrade is to use PwnageTool but I would advise that before you upgrade you jailbreak your current firmware and load Cydia so that it stores an SHSH on file for whatever version you are currently at.
Edgar - February 7, 2010 at 1:54am
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it's already stored with Cydia. So I can go ahead and upgrade to 3.1.2 using this procedure and Redsnow instead of PwnageTool (since I don't have a Mac.)?
Nathaniel - February 7, 2010 at 3:26am
Hmmm, interesting. I understand your problem now. If Apple has stopped signing 3.1.2 then I doubt you would be able to restore to it, going up or down. You can't use Cydia SHSH cause you don't have one stored for 3.1.2. I'm not even sure if PwnageTool would work, but it would be the most likely. Check online for a pwned 3.1.2 ipsw. Maybe someone else could confirm whether or not Apple is allowing upgrade to 3.1.2.
Edgar - February 7, 2010 at 3:49am
I go on Cydia and it says I have it stored for 3.1 and 3.1.2. I'm on 3.0. Yeah, I'm not sure either. *Scratches head.*
Todd - February 7, 2010 at 11:00am
You can use redsnow to jailbreak 3.1.2.
Frank - February 7, 2010 at 2:29pm
Apple only signs 3.1.3 on 3GS so in order to upgrade or downgrade to a different firmware, this is the only way.
mikemoioney - February 8, 2010 at 2:37am
I took a chance and used this method to upgrade from 3.0.2 to 3.1.2 and it worked, I did have an issue with untrasn0w where the iphone couldn't get onto the GSM network, to get around this I restored 3.1.2 onto the device and used the blackra1n & blacksn0w combination to jailbreak/unlock mike
Edgar - February 9, 2010 at 2:55pm
Thanks for the confirmation! I figured that it work upgrading. Thanks for telling me! :) Not worried about an unlock, though. Lol.
Edgar - February 13, 2010 at 2:59pm
Okay, upgraded to 3.1.2 from 3.0 successfully! iPhone 3Gs, Old bootrom. Thanks iClarified, and repliers.
xsn0w - March 5, 2010 at 10:35pm
Yes. Loading any firmware other than 3.1.3 is considered a "downgrade" even if you are updating your phone. This can only be done with a SHSH backup, on saurik's server or on your computer, creating a local server with ubrella-tss. Both options require an edit of the "hosts" file. An unofficially confirmed method to restore to 3.1.2, maintain 5.11 baseband without using a backed up shsh exists: This guy claims (if i am not mistaken, the "engrish" is terrible) that this firmware appears to be 3.1.3 to itunes but is actually jailbreakable and unlockable 3.1.2. I unfortunately cannot use this as my replacement iPhone is new-bootrom and 3.1.3, 5.12 bb. Im well-jailed mate. Been a jailbreaking guru since 2.x, broke my early bootrom 3Gs with all the Hashes on file. Now my replacement-phone looks like every other dumb iPhone. I used to laugh at peoples black wallpaper and bad UI Sounds. I have to look at/hear that everyday now until a solution is found. At least I don't have to look at scratches...
