Independent developer Esa Helttula has announced the release of Lattice Multiplication 1.0, an educational math app for iPhone and iPod touch. The app can be used to teach and study the ancient lattice multiplication method.
The Ancient Lattice Multiplication Method: Lattice multiplication is algorithmically equivalent to long multiplication. A lattice (a grid) guides the calculation. All the multiplications are done first and then the additions.
Leonardo of Pisa, who is better known as Fibonacci, introduced the method to Europe in 1202. In his groundbreaking book "Liber Abaci" Fibonacci presented many algorithms for working with Arabic numerals. He presented both the current standard long multiplication method and also an Indian method that he called lattice multiplication, which is faster and more compact for working with large numbers.
The lattice multiplication is one of the multiplication methods used in the Everyday Math curriculum, which is a new mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. In the United States over 3 million students in 185,000 classrooms are currently following this new curriculum.
The Lattice Multiplication App: The Lattice Multiplication app allows the user to solve a lattice multiplication problem step by step and animates all the steps. In the steps the user will multiply or add, and the correct answer will fly to the right place in the lattice. If the user presses the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.
The Lattice Multiplication app has the following settings: * The multiplicand can have up to 5 digits * The multiplier can have up to 3 digits * The current operation for each step can be hidden * There are 3 different themes: black, gray and gold * The speed of the animations can be set
The Lattice Multiplication is just a one app in a series of popular educational math apps for iPhone. Some of my other mathematics apps are Long Division, Column Addition and Column Subtraction. I have also several apps that use alternative algorithms for addition and subtraction.
Pricing and Availability: Lattice Multiplication 1.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category.
