If your getting 1600 error try creating a new custom firmware with pwnage and\or change your usb cable. Worked for me.

Go to iPwner it and it doesnt detect my iPhone in restore mode. Tryed skipping that step, doing it on QuickPwn to see what would happen and then build an IPSW, doesnt work, the firware is not compatible or there is an error. Try using the newest PwnageTool [not used in this tutorial] and whenver i select the right ipsw, even the one it gave me to download and use, says its the wrong bundle or isnt a recognized ISPW.

I've been getting these errors for a few days now and I think i might have resolved my issue by NOT going into DFU mode while restoring with a CUSTOM firmware on windows (holding Shift + clicking Restore) or on Mac (holding Option + clicking Restore). I've found that it's easier to download a IPSW made with a MAC and use that while restoring with a custom with iTunes 8. Also, for jailbreaking your iphone the easiest thing to do is in Winpwn 2.5 v2 you click the "Custom" button on the top right corner of the screen so that it says "Quickpwn", you then choose your phone (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2) and follow the instructions on the screen. Jailbreak should be done BEFORE you instill your custom firmware. ....Alright guys, I was actually doing the custom restore while writing this and now I have mine ready and going with a T-Mobile SIM card in it. The unlock is working and it's been jailbroken, so i hope everything works out for you guys. Just remember when doing CUSTOM restore, don't have your iphone in DFU mode.

I tried to use the pwnage tool at step 20 I get a message saying "The iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured. (2001)" Other times it was error 2005. Is there a way to get pass this error? If not, is there a way to somehow get the phone back to a default state so I can start over? Please help.

You need to go back to step 11 and starta again from there... But you may need assistance by phone... because there are some instructions that are not inside the tutorial and you need them... I would like to assist you from here, but it is complicated to write all the stuff... I also had to go back to this step, but my son helped me through the iChat...

thanks for the advice , reading is indeed not so easy ! Now I'm stuck with the next problem ; after running the custom restore I get the message "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)." !!!

This problem is solved when you HOLD DOWN the OPTION key on your keyboard at the same time you click restore... The OPTION key is located next to the apple sign on your left side... When you do this, it won't open iTunes, it will give you the option to open the file you are being asked to on the next step.

For me the tutorial did not work - but I found out why: You need to select "BSD-Tools" otherwise the BootNeuter-App will not be able to flash the baseband (at least in Pwnage 1.1) Perhaps you should add this hint to your guide? I found this info on: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=282747

@JG, unfortunately i got the same result. I get to step 18. When i launch i tunes i only see a white screen that says "the sim car inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported" Any ideas? should i just stop trying and remove pwnage (which im not even sure how) and try a different way of upgrading and unlocking the firmware? This is harder than i thought it would be. thx.

u need to force restore mode. power off iphone. then, press and hold the home button while plugging it into dock. wait until itunes sees iphone before releasing home button. itunes will recognize the iphone as being in restore mode and will ask to flash firmware to new version.

@JG Thanks but im confused. I have all my original iphone/itunes data still on my PC. I just tried to set up a the iphone with the new itunes with the new Mac. Are you suggesting i delete and reinstall itunes on the Mac? How do i enter the into restore mode if itunes doesnt allow detection of the iphone because it says "sim card does not appear to be supported" in the main window?

@ JC: Restore the turboism 1.12 iPhone to OTB status by deleting Itunes (dont worry it wont remove your library) and re-installing itunes. Next, plug iPhone into it by entering your restore mode. iTunes will restore it to 1.1.4 The proceed to pwnage your iPhone. JG

i think im in trouble here. I originally had a 1.1.2 iphone running on turbosim. I needed to upgrade the firmware because i got a new macbook with the new itunes. I left the turbosim in thru all this. So, i first "restored" on itunes on the mac (i think this was how i was supposed to get 1.1.4 update). Then went through all steps fine here but when i got to step 18... now it says "The SIM card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported". The phone is stuck in its original OTB mode. if restore the phone it does start with that pineapple logo first. Anyone know what to do????????

Hey, do I feel the fool, it tells me how to at the end of the Subsystem tutorial, sorry for wasting space!

Great tutorial, it works! Also helps looking at hackthatphone's tutorial. This tutorial suggests that "After pwning your iPhone it is highly recommended that you install BSD Subsystem and SSH." There is a tutorial for BSD Subsystem installation but not for SSH. How is that done?

Hmmm.. I get to seventeen, where you must launch iTunes. However, I do not get the iphone page with a restore button, but the AT & T 'Let's get started' page within iTunes. (Tried a few times.) What has gone wrong? And more importantly: what should I do?

I got my iPod Touch to work as I want it to with all the apps currently... If I pwn it now would I be able to restore with my apps if the iPod decides to crash or something?? Or do you still have to manually restore applications??

I get to step eighteen: Select your iPhone from the list on the left. Hold down the Option and click the Restore button. I select the new custom_restore.ipsw file, and it then proceeds to attempt to restore the iPhone. I then get an error which states "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)." This is a brand new out of the box phone. What am I doing wrong? I am really looking for any help you can offer.

I get to step eighteen: Select your iPhone from the list on the left. Hold down the Option and click the Restore button. When I select it in iTunes, it says, "Are you sure you want to retore the iPhone "iPhone" to its factory settings? All of your songs and other data will be erased." I click the restore button next. Then I get a dialog that says "There was a problem downloading the iPhone software for the iPhone "iPhone". The requested resource was not found. What do I do? This is a brand new, right out of the box iPhone 8gig. I followed each step successfully up to this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Matthew O\\\'Connell 2008-04-07 21:32:21 Everything went fine for me, but now I can't open the Mail.app on my iPhone. It opens and closes again almost immediately" Exactly same for me - mail opens & closes immediately.
