MultiEducator has introduced Battleships of the US Navy 1.0 for the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Third in their "History on the Go" series of iPhone apps, it features more than 260 high-resolution photos which can be zoomed in to examine in minute detail on the iPad. Besides an authoritative history of battleships, the app includes complete specs on all 22 classes, commissioned between 1895 and 1944. A total of 64 ships are listed with histories and hi-res photos, all now in the public domain.
Calling on their 20+ years experience as publishers of multimedia educational materials, Battleships of the US Navy is well designed and executed. The contents page includes a search field, an overview chapter, then 64 chapter listings which can be easily scrolled. Tapping on a particular ship, for example "USS New Jersey BB-62", brings up another scrolling listing of an introductory article (5,000 words or more), and 7 different photos.
Each hi-res photo has an optional caption that describes the circumstances under which the photo was captured, for example, "USS New Jersey 1983 - An aerial starboard bow view of the battleship USS New Jersey (BB 62) prior to conducting Harpoon missile tests on the Pacific Missile Test Center (PMTC) range. Its 16-inch guns are turned to port on March 23, 1983."
Feature Highlights: * Thousands of facts in 65 articles, plus 260 hi-res photos * The ideal way to learn about US battleships * Especially designed for iPad usage, allowing display of photographic detail * Official US Navy photographs with optional captions * Completely self-contained - no Internet connection necessary * Photos can be saved or shared with others * First in a series of apps on the US Navy for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch
The app includes one-touch icons to return to the table of contents, go back to recently viewed pages, and to access the list of user selected favorites. Battleships of the US Navy is the first of a series of apps on the US Navy MultiEducator plans to release in the coming year.
"Battleships of the US Navy puts 65 articles and over 260 photos at your fingertips," commented company President Marc Schulman. "For any history buff, this is a great app."
