T-Mobile has announced that 'T-Mobile Starlink,' its new satellite-based messaging service, is now available in public beta. Developed in partnership with Starlink, the service uses satellites equipped with Direct-to‑Cell technology to deliver text messages (with plans to add picture messaging, data, and voice calls later) to areas that lack traditional cell tower coverage.
T‑Mobile Starlink relies on specially configured satellites orbiting at over 200 miles above Earth and traveling at speeds exceeding 17,000 miles per hour. When a user's smartphone moves out of range of conventional cell towers, it automatically connects to the satellite network. This seamless switch means that users do not need to manually adjust settings. The service is designed to work on most smartphones from the last four years, including many recent iPhone models, ensuring that Apple users remain connected in remote or "dead zone" areas.
In addition to basic messaging, T‑Mobile Starlink broadcasts Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) nationwide. This feature ensures that, even in regions outside traditional cellular coverage, users with compatible devices can receive critical emergency notifications—whether they are on a remote hiking trail or in an area affected by severe weather or natural disasters.
The beta program is free until July. After the beta period, T‑Mobile Starlink will be included at no extra cost on T‑Mobile's Go5G Next plans (including the Go5G Next 55+ plan) and Go5G Business Next for business customers, as well as select plans for first responder agencies on T‑Priority. Customers on other plans will have the option to add the service for $15 per month per line. For those who register during the beta period, an Early Adopter Discount of $10 per month per line (a 33% discount) is available through February.
In an effort to demonstrate the service's capabilities to a broader audience, T‑Mobile is also inviting AT&T and Verizon customers to try T‑Mobile Starlink on their existing devices. During the beta, these users can send and receive text messages via the satellite network at no cost. Once the service officially launches in July, AT&T and Verizon customers will be able to subscribe for $20 per month per line.
