Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference brought the official reveal of macOS Tahoe, the next major software update for the Mac. Featuring a new "Liquid Glass" design, deeper Continuity features with the Phone app, and a major overhaul for Spotlight, the update is a significant one.
Naturally, the first question for many Mac users is: will my machine be able to run it? We've got the official compatibility list from Apple right here.
Macs That Will Get macOS Tahoe
Apple has confirmed the following Mac models are compatible with macOS Tahoe. The list includes all Macs with Apple silicon and a specific range of Intel-based machines.
● MacBook Air: 2020 (M1) and later ● MacBook Pro: 2020 (M1) and later, plus: ○ 16‑inch, 2019 ○ 13‑inch, 2020 (Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) ● iMac: 2020 and later ● Mac mini: 2020 (M1) and later ● Mac Studio: 2022 and later ● Mac Pro: 2019 and later
Macs That Are Not Supported
As Apple pushes the Mac's capabilities forward, support for several older Intel models has been discontinued. The following Macs that could run last year's macOS Sequoia will not be able to update to macOS Tahoe:
● MacBook Pro: This category has the most specific changes. ○ All 2018 models are no longer supported. ○ For 2019 models, only the high-end 16-inch model remains supported. The 13-inch MacBook Pro (2019) models are now dropped. ○ For 2020 Intel models, only the higher-end four-port version is still supported. The 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) is no longer supported.
● iMac: ○ Support for the 2019 iMac models (both 21.5-inch and 27-inch) has been dropped.
● iMac Pro: ○ The iMac Pro (2017), which was the final model of that line, is no longer supported by the latest macOS.
● Mac mini: ○ The popular Mac mini (2018) Intel model has been dropped from the compatibility list.
In short, the update removes support primarily for Intel Macs from the 2018-2019 era, continuing the shift towards machines with Apple silicon or higher-end Intel chips with specific security or graphics capabilities.
How to Check Your Mac and Prepare for the Update
Not sure which Mac you have? It's easy to check. Just click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select About This Mac. A window will appear with your Mac model and its release year.
Before any major OS update, a little preparation is always a good idea: ● Back Up Your Mac: This is the most important step. Use Time Machine or your preferred backup method to ensure all your data is safe just in case something goes wrong during the update. ● Check Your Storage: Make sure you have enough free space. Major macOS updates can require 20GB or more of available storage to download and install properly.
Key Features and Release Info The macOS Tahoe update is focused on productivity and intelligence. Key features include the arrival of the Phone app on Mac, Live Activities in the menu bar, and a completely redesigned Spotlight that can take direct actions.
Similar to the updates for iPhone and iPad, macOS Tahoe is infused with Apple Intelligence. These advanced AI features will require a Mac with an M1 chip or later to function.
The macOS Tahoe update will be available as a free software update this fall. A public beta will be available for testers starting in July. When the final version is released, you can update from System Settings > General > Software Update.
