Proton, the company behind a suite of privacy-focused apps, has released a new two-factor authentication tool for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Called Proton Authenticator, the new free and open-source app is designed as a secure alternative to other 2FA solutions, offering end-to-end encryption and the option to sync codes across devices or keep them local.
The new authenticator app supports importing existing 2FA tokens, offline access, and can be secured with biometrics or a PIN code. Unlike some authenticators, Proton says its new app is open source, ad-free, and doesn't use trackers. It also allows users to export their 2FA tokens, avoiding vendor lock-in.
The release of a dedicated app comes even though the company's Proton Pass password manager already includes a built-in 2FA authenticator. Proton says this gives users a choice: use Proton Pass for the convenience of autofilling both passwords and 2FA codes, or use the standalone Authenticator app for the added security of keeping them separate.
Proton Authenticator is available now on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, as well as Windows and Linux. Users can choose to keep their 2FA codes stored locally on a single device or sync them across multiple devices using either an iCloud account or a free Proton Account. All synced data is end-to-end encrypted.
