Proton Launches 'Proton Pass' App for Mac

Proton has announced the launch of a 'Proton Pass' app for macOS and Linux. Proton Pass is a open-source password manager that helps you keep your credentials secure.

One of the most popular requests from the Proton community was a standalone desktop app, which is now available on every major platform — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and iPadOS, and Chrome OS (via our Android app).

Proton has also announced a standalone native Safari browser extension. This extension offers enhanced convenience and security for everyone that uses macOS's default browser. Unlike Safari's default password manager, Proton Pass allows you to sync your logins across multiple different browsers and devices, ensuring consistent access across all platforms.

The Linux version of Proton Pass supports all Debian and RedHat-based distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and CentOS. All Proton Pass apps and browser extensions are available to everyone, and you can use our apps in offline mode with a paid plan.

Proton Pass Features

● Autosave and autofill for apps and websites
● Generate secure passwords and passphrases
● Sync across all your devices
● Hide-my-email aliases(new window)
● Secure password sharing(new window)
● Built-in 2FA authenticator(new window)
● Passkey support(new window)
● Proton Sentinel(new window) (an AI-driven high-security program)

Offline mode with enhanced Argon2-based security
Unlike many standalone password apps, Pass allows anyone with a paid Proton Pass plan to access their passwords and other Pass items offline. Passwords are stored locally and secured with the Argon2(new window) password-hashing algorithm, known for its robust defense against brute-force attacks.

Passwordless unlock
Proton Pass will soon offer TouchID(new window) on macOS, allowing you to unlock your accounts using your fingerprints.

Similarly, an upcoming update for Linux will integrate with the system's authentication mechanisms and APIs. This means you can unlock Pass with your Linux user account, fingerprint sensors, or any other method supported by Linux Pluggable Authentication Modules(new window) (Linux PAM), a suite of libraries built into many Linux distributions that allows you to securely and conveniently verify your identity.

These features will be provided as an automatic update in the coming weeks.

Pricing and Availability
Proton Pass for macOS, Linux, and Safari is now available for immediate download. If you are not a subscriber, Proton Pass is offering 83% off a one year subscription, bringing the price down to $0.83/month.
