President Donald Trump and Apple are set to announce an additional $100 billion commitment to domestic manufacturing, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The announcement is expected at the White House on Wednesday, with CEO Tim Cook slated to attend.
This new pledge will reportedly include a manufacturing program aimed at bringing more of Apple's supply chain to the U.S. and producing more critical components stateside. The White House says this will bring Apple's total investment commitment to $600 billion, on top of a $500 billion pledge the company made back in February.
Just last week, on Apple's third-quarter earnings call, the company disclosed it had already taken an $800 million hit from tariffs and expected that to grow to $1.1 billion in the September quarter.
"Today's announcement with Apple is another win for our manufacturing industry that will simultaneously help reshore the production of critical components to protect America's economic and national security," White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement.
While a significant investment, the report notes it stops short of a full-scale shift to U.S.-based iPhone assembly, a massive undertaking for the company. During the earnings call, Cook noted that "the vast majority" of iPhones sold in the U.S. now come from India, adding that Apple "will do more in the United States." The company has not yet commented on the new announcement.
