Apple has officially released macOS Tahoe 26, its next major software update for the Mac. The release follows several months of beta testing that began after the new operating system was first unveiled at WWDC in June. The update brings a significant visual redesign, deeper integration with the iPhone, and a major expansion of Apple Intelligence.
The most significant change is a new universal design language built around a material Apple calls 'Liquid Glass.' The new aesthetic overhauls the look and feel of the Mac, with a transparent menu bar, refined Dock and app icons, and in-app elements that refract and reflect their surroundings. Users also get more personalization options, including new controls for the menu bar and Control Center, and the ability to add colors and symbols to folders.
Productivity gets a major boost with a completely overhauled Spotlight that now functions as an action hub. You can now take actions within apps, browse clipboard history, and use "quick keys" to launch tasks directly from the search bar. Continuity with the iPhone is also getting deeper with the arrival of the full Phone app on macOS, bringing features like Call Screening and Hold Assist. Live Activities from a nearby iPhone will now appear in the Mac's menu bar.
Apple Intelligence is expanding its reach across the operating system. Live Translation will allow for real-time translation in Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app, while Shortcuts becomes more powerful with new intelligent actions. Users can now tap directly into Apple's AI models to automate complex tasks, like summarizing a lecture transcription and comparing it to notes. In Reminders, Apple Intelligence can find action items from emails or websites and automatically categorize tasks.
For gamers, macOS Tahoe introduces a new Apple Games app to centralize your library and social connections, alongside a new in-game Game Overlay for quick access to settings. The update also brings Metal 4 with advanced rendering technologies. The Journal app is also coming to the Mac, and Safari gets a refresh that Apple claims is 50 percent faster than Chrome at loading frequently visited sites, while offering up to four more hours of battery life when streaming video.
