Apple is stepping up its clean energy commitments, expanding solar and wind projects across Europe and marking a major milestone in its Chinese supply chain. The moves, announced today, advance the company's goal of becoming carbon neutral across all operations by 2030.
In Europe, Apple is rolling out new large-scale renewable projects in Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, and Romania, which together will add 650 megawatts of capacity to the grid. The effort is designed to match the electricity Apple customers in Europe use to power their devices. Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said the company wants users to know that "all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity."
In China, more than 90 percent of Apple's manufacturing now runs on renewable energy, thanks to over 100 participating suppliers. Building on that progress, Apple announced a new 1 billion RMB (about $150 million) investment fund—led entirely by its suppliers—to accelerate the development of clean energy infrastructure across the country. Key partners including ATL, Foxconn, and Yutong Technology are taking part. "This new supplier-led fund will build on existing achievements and help accelerate our goal of carbon neutrality across the entire industry chain by 2030," said Sabih Khan, Apple's chief operating officer.
The new initiatives represent another step toward the Apple 2030 target. They follow a growing series of environmental projects, including Apple's recent effort to protect and restore a California redwood forest to generate carbon credits. The company's clean-energy expansion also parallels its broader supply chain diversification, which now includes 45 manufacturing partners in India.
