Can I upgrade an iPhone 4 from iOS 4.1 to 5.1 while preserving the baseband?

I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 with baseband 2.10.04. The device is jailbroken and unlocked using a Gevey SIM. I have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.3.3, 4.3.5, 5.0.1, and 5.1. When attempting to upgrade using a custom IPSW in RedSn0w to preserve the baseband, I encountered iTunes errors 3194 and 1600. Is there a way to successfully upgrade to iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 and maintain the Gevey SIM unlock?

Yes, you can upgrade to iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 as long as you have the SHSH blobs for those specific versions. To resolve error 3194, you must use a tool like iFaith or RedSn0w to stitch your saved SHSH blobs into the IPSW file. This creates a signed firmware that iTunes will accept. Error 1600 typically means the device is not in Pwned DFU mode. Use RedSn0w to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode before attempting the restore in iTunes. To keep your Gevey SIM working, it is critical that you use a custom IPSW that does not update the baseband. As long as your baseband remains at 2.10.04, the Gevey SIM should function correctly on iOS 5.x. Make sure you are using the correct version of iTunes for these older restores, as newer versions may occasionally block custom firmware installs on legacy hardware.
