I am looking for a way to software unlock an iPhone 4 that is currently locked to the Softbank network in Japan. Is there a free tool or software available to do this?

A software unlock for the iPhone 4 is generally only possible if the device is running baseband version 01.59.00. This is achieved by jailbreaking the phone and installing UltraSn0w from Cydia. Because Softbank Japan units were frequently updated, many of them have newer baseband versions that are not compatible with this free software method. If your device has a newer baseband, you cannot unlock it via software. Historically, users turned to hardware solutions like a Gevey SIM interposer to get the phone working on other networks. Another option is a permanent IMEI unlock, but these are rarely free and Softbank's policies on older devices make them difficult to obtain directly from the carrier.
