What is the best update and jailbreak path for an iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1?

I am currently using a jailbroken iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1 but need to update for better app compatibility. Is it possible to update to an intermediate version like iOS 6.0.1 instead of the latest version? I want to avoid a tethered jailbreak if possible and am looking for the best untethered options available for this device.

For the iPhone 4S, you generally cannot update to unsigned intermediate versions like iOS 6.0.1 unless you have previously saved SHSH blobs for that specific firmware. However, iOS 6.1.3 is an excellent option for the iPhone 4S because it remains signed by Apple as part of a downgrade and update path. Unlike some later versions of iOS, 6.1.3 has a stable untethered jailbreak available using the p0sixspwn tool. This allows you to gain better app compatibility than iOS 5 while maintaining the speed and performance legacy hardware is known for on iOS 6. You should avoid tethered jailbreaks whenever possible as they require a computer connection to reboot the device. Updating to 6.1.3 and applying an untethered jailbreak is currently your best path for functionality and ease of use.
