I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS 4, but I am unable to connect it to a computer due to a hardware problem. Is there a way to update it to iOS 5 without using iTunes?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to update an iPhone 3GS from iOS 4 to iOS 5 without using a computer and iTunes. Wireless over-the-air (OTA) updates were not introduced until iOS 5, so devices running iOS 4 or earlier must be physically connected to a computer to perform a software update. Because your device has a hardware problem preventing it from being recognized by a computer, you will need to have the docking port repaired or try a different USB cable before you can proceed. Additionally, because your iPhone is jailbroken, a standard restore via iTunes is the recommended way to move to a newer firmware version.
