I am currently running a jailbroken version of iOS 4.2.1 and tried upgrading to iOS 5.1.1, but I receive error 3194. I have already tried modifying the hosts file without success. How can I complete this upgrade?

To upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 and resolve error 3194, you must first ensure that Apple is still signing the firmware for your specific device or that you have saved SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1. Error 3194 typically occurs when iTunes cannot verify the firmware with Apple's servers. If you are using an older device like the iPhone 3GS or iPad 1, you can use a tool like RedSn0w to stitch your saved SHSH blobs into a custom IPSW file. Once the custom IPSW is created, put your device into Pwned DFU mode using RedSn0w, then open iTunes and hold the Shift key on Windows or the Option key on Mac while clicking Restore to select your custom firmware file. If you do not have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 5.1.1, you will not be able to upgrade to that specific version unless Apple is still signing it for your hardware.
