I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS 3.1.2 and want to upgrade to iOS 6.1.2 to use an untethered jailbreak. I have downloaded the firmware file from iClarified but need instructions on how to install it via iTunes without being forced to update to the latest available version.

To install a specific iOS firmware version that you have downloaded, connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Navigate to the device summary page. If you are on Windows, hold the Shift key and click Restore. If you are on a Mac, hold the Option key and click Restore. A window will appear allowing you to select the IPSW file you downloaded from iClarified. Please be aware that iTunes will only allow the restore if Apple is still signing that firmware or if you have saved SHSH blobs for your device. For the iPhone 3GS, it is recommended to update to iOS 6.1.6, as it is the final supported version and an untethered jailbreak is available via p0sixspwn.

To restore to a specific firmware version like iOS 6.1.2, connect your device to iTunes and hold the Shift key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) while clicking the Restore button. This allows you to select the IPSW file manually. Note that this process will fail with an error if you do not have saved SHSH blobs for iOS 6.1.2, as Apple is no longer signing that version. If you are looking for an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 3GS, you should consider updating to the final version, iOS 6.1.6, which can be jailbroken using the p0sixspwn tool.
