I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1 and want to update the firmware without updating the baseband to preserve my unlock. What is the best way to do this?

To update your iPhone 3GS while preserving the baseband, you need to use a tool to create a custom IPSW firmware file. This process prevents the modem firmware from being updated, which is essential if you rely on a software unlock like Ultrasn0w. On Windows, you can use sn0wbreeze, and on Mac, you can use PwnageTool to build the custom firmware. Once the custom file is ready, put your iPhone into a Pwned DFU state using a tool like Redsn0w or iREB. Finally, open iTunes and perform a restore using your custom IPSW to update the OS while keeping your current baseband version.

First, save your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella. Create a custom firmware with sn0wbreeze to preserve the baseband, put your iPhone into DFU mode, and restore the firmware with iTunes.
