I am using an iPhone 4s with an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 and I want to know the highest firmware version I can safely upgrade to and jailbreak. I am fairly experienced with jailbreaking but cannot find a definitive answer for this specific device online.

The highest firmware version available for the iPhone 4s is iOS 9.3.6. You can jailbreak this version using the Phoenix jailbreak tool. It is important to note that while your current iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak is untethered, the jailbreak for iOS 9.3.6 is semi-untethered. This means you must run a jailbreak app on the device to re-enable your tweaks every time the phone is rebooted. Since Apple has stopped signing intermediate versions like iOS 6, 7, or 8, you can only upgrade to the latest supported version for your hardware unless you have previously saved SHSH blobs for your specific device.
