Error 1015 on an iPhone 3G usually occurs when you try to restore firmware that has a lower baseband version than what is currently on the device. If you used a tool to kick the device out of recovery mode to bypass this error, your filesystem might still be in a semi-broken state, which prevents apps from installing. To fix this, you should perform a clean restore to iOS 4.2.1. When the restore finishes and shows error 1015, do not just exit recovery mode. Instead, use a tool like Redsn0w to jailbreak the device. During the jailbreak process, ensure Install Cydia is checked. This will properly activate the device and patch the filesystem, allowing you to install applications from both the App Store and Cydia again.
