I have an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 3G. When I try to download apps from the App Store, I am told that I need iOS 4.3. Since the iPhone 3G is limited to iOS 4.2.1, how can I find and install compatible versions of apps like Facebook and Instagram?

The iPhone 3G cannot be upgraded to iOS 4.3 or later because of hardware limitations. Its final official software version is iOS 4.2.1. To get apps on this device, you should first add the app to your Apple ID using a newer device or an older version of iTunes on a computer. Once the app is in your purchase history, open the App Store on your iPhone 3G and go to the Purchased section. When you try to download the app there, Apple may offer you the last compatible version for iOS 4.2.1 if one exists. For jailbroken users, you can also look into custom firmware like Whited00r or check legacy community repositories that host older versions of software specifically for vintage iOS devices.
