I am trying to update an iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) from iOS 4.0.1 to 5.1.1 while preserving the 05.13.04 baseband for an Ultrasn0w unlock. I created a custom NO_BB IPSW using RedSn0w 0.9.15b3, but I am encountering Error 32 in iTunes when trying to restore in Pwned DFU mode. How can I fix this error and successfully complete the update?

To update an iPhone 3GS while preserving your baseband, it is highly recommended to use the restore functionality built into RedSn0w rather than using iTunes. This avoids many of the common restore errors like Error 32.
1. Open RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 and navigate to Extras, then Even More, and click Restore.
2. Click IPSW and select the iOS 5.1.1 firmware file you downloaded.
3. RedSn0w will ask if you want to preserve your baseband; select Yes.
4. You will be prompted for your SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1. You can point to local blobs if you have them saved or attempt to fetch them from Cydia. Note that you must have these blobs to restore to a firmware that Apple is no longer signing.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode. RedSn0w will then handle the restore process automatically.
After the restore is finished, go back to the main RedSn0w menu and click Jailbreak. Once the jailbreak is complete and the device has rebooted, open Cydia and install Ultrasn0w to unlock the device for use with other carriers.
