I recently purchased an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1. To use the Absinthe jailbreak, I need to update to iOS 5.1.1. Since Apple is no longer signing that firmware, is there a way to upgrade or do I have to wait for an iOS 6 jailbreak?

To upgrade an iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1.1 while Apple is no longer signing that firmware, you would need to have SHSH blobs saved specifically for your device. Since you just acquired the phone and it is currently on 5.1, you likely do not have these blobs. Unfortunately, without SHSH blobs, it is impossible to restore or update to an unsigned firmware version. You can check the iClarified jailbreak wizard to see if a jailbreak is available for your current version of iOS 5.1 or consider whether you want to update to a newer version that might have a jailbreak available.

You cannot upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 without having previously saved SHSH blobs for that specific firmware. Apple uses a signing system that prevents users from installing firmware versions that are no longer officially supported. If you do not have blobs, your only official option is to update to the latest signed version of iOS available for your device.
