I am currently using an iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 and would like to update to iOS 5.1.1 rather than iOS 6.0. I only have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.1. Is it possible to update to iOS 5.1.1 without the required SHSH blobs?

No, it is not possible to update to iOS 5.1.1 without saved SHSH blobs for that specific firmware version. Apple uses a signing server to authorize firmware installations. When a version is no longer being signed, iTunes cannot complete the restore or update process without those blobs. Because you only have blobs for iOS 4.1, you are limited to staying on 4.1 or updating to the latest version Apple supports for the iPhone 3GS, which is iOS 6.1.6.

You cannot perform this update because iTunes will return an error. Apple requires digital signatures, known as SHSH blobs, to authorize firmware updates. Since Apple is no longer signing iOS 5.1.1 and you do not have the blobs saved, you can only update to the firmware version Apple is currently signing for the iPhone 3GS, which is iOS 6.1.6.
