I have an iPhone 3GS that was purchased factory unlocked from Apple. It is currently jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1 using GreenPois0n. Is it possible to upgrade this device to a jailbroken version of iOS 5, and if so, what is the process?

To upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iOS 5.1.1, you must have saved SHSH blobs for that specific firmware version because Apple is no longer signing it. If you have the blobs, you can use RedSn0w to restore to a custom IPSW. Since your iPhone is factory unlocked, you do not need to worry about the baseband. If you do not have blobs for iOS 5, your best option is to upgrade to iOS 6.1.6, which is the final supported version for the 3GS. You can restore to 6.1.6 via iTunes and then use the p0sixspwn tool for an untethered jailbreak. Detailed guides and tool downloads are available at www.iclarified.com/jailbreak/iphone3gs.php

You can upgrade using RedSn0w. Download the tool from www.iclarified.com/16424 and obtain the 5.1.1 IPSW firmware file. Open RedSn0w, go to Extras, then click on Even More, and select Restore. You will be prompted to select the IPSW to restore to. Follow the steps provided in the utility to complete the process.

RedSn0w supports the upgrade and downgrade function, but it requires SHSH blobs to be stitched into the firmware. If you do not have saved iOS 5 blobs, you will not be able to upgrade specifically to iOS 5.1.1.
