I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.4 and the modem firmware is 04.12.09. My service provider is SoftBank in Japan. Now that my 2-year contract is over, is there any way to unlock it for use on other carriers?

To unlock an iPhone 4 with modem firmware 04.12.09, software-based unlocking tools like Ultrasn0w are not an option because they do not support this specific baseband. Since your contract with SoftBank Japan has ended, the most reliable method is to contact SoftBank directly and request an official IMEI unlock. If they are unable to assist, you would need to use a reputable third-party IMEI unlock service. Note that hardware SIM interposers often have compatibility issues with this specific firmware version, so an official carrier unlock is the recommended path.
