I have an iPhone 4S stuck in recovery mode after a failed update to iOS 7.1.2. When attempting to restore the device in DFU mode, the process fails at the very end with iTunes Error 1. I suspect it might be a baseband firmware issue, but I am looking for any possible software solutions to get the device working again.

iTunes Error 1 during an iPhone 4S restore typically indicates a hardware communication issue with the baseband chip, especially if the restore fails at the very end of the process. Before concluding it is a hardware failure, you should try a few software troubleshooting steps. First, ensure you are using the latest version of iTunes or Finder on a Mac. Try using a different high-quality 30-pin USB cable and a different USB port directly on your computer, avoiding USB hubs. You can also try performing the restore on a different computer to rule out driver conflicts. If the error persists across multiple computers and cables, it is likely a physical failure of the baseband hardware, which was a known issue on some iPhone 4S units. In such cases, a professional hardware repair or motherboard replacement would be required.
