I am currently using an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0.1 and would like to update it to iOS 5.1.1. Do I need to update to iOS 6 first and then restore back to iOS 5.1.1, or is there a direct method to reach that specific version?

To update an iPhone 3GS to a specific firmware version like iOS 5.1.1, Apple must still be signing that version, or you must have saved SHSH blobs for your specific device for that version. Currently, Apple is no longer signing iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone 3GS. The only officially supported path is to update to the latest compatible version, which is iOS 6.1.6. 1. If you do not have SHSH blobs for iOS 5.1.1 saved from when that version was active, you cannot restore or update to it. 2. Updating to iOS 6 and then attempting to downgrade will not work without those blobs. 3. If you want the most stable experience for an iPhone 3GS today, updating to iOS 6.1.6 via iTunes or Finder is the recommended path. If you have your SHSH blobs, you can use a tool like RedSn0w or iFaith to create a signed firmware file for the restore, but without them, iOS 6.1.6 is your only option.
