To unlock an iPhone 3GS with baseband 05.16.07 on iOS 6.0.1, you generally have two options. The most reliable method is to request an official IMEI unlock from the original carrier, which is often free for older devices. If you prefer a software-based approach, you must first jailbreak the device. Since baseband 05.16.07 cannot be unlocked directly, you would typically use a tool like Redsn0w to flash the 06.15.00 iPad baseband and then immediately downgrade it to 05.13.04. Once the baseband is at version 05.13.04, you can install the ultrasn0w utility from Cydia to unlock the phone for use with other carriers.
