Can I Upgrade or Downgrade an iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1 Without SHSH Blobs?

I have a friend who purchased a new iPhone 4S that came pre-installed with iOS 5.1. Since there is currently no jailbreak for 5.1, we are looking to either upgrade to 5.1.1 or downgrade to 5.0.1. However, since the device is brand new, we do not have any saved SHSH blobs. Is there a workaround to change the firmware version in this situation?

For the iPhone 4S, downgrading to a version like iOS 5.0.1 is not possible without previously saved SHSH blobs for that specific device. Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0.1, and because the 4S uses the A5 chip, it is much more restrictive regarding firmware restores than older devices. However, you can freely upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 as long as Apple is still signing that firmware version. Once you are on iOS 5.1.1, you can use tools like Absinthe 2.0 to perform an untethered jailbreak, which was released for that specific version.
