I recently purchased a refurbished iPhone 4S that has not been activated yet and I need to determine which iOS version is currently installed on the device.

To check the firmware on an unactivated iPhone 4S, connect the device to a computer using a 30-pin USB cable. Open iTunes or Finder on your computer, and the device summary screen should display the software version. If the device is not recognized or you cannot bypass the activation screen, third-party utilities like iMazing or 3uTools can often retrieve the firmware version and other hardware details while the phone is in recovery mode or on the Hello screen. Once the device is activated, you can also find this information by navigating to Settings, General, and About.
