I am looking for the best way to unlock an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.1 with baseband 05.14.02. Should I install the 06.15.00 iPad baseband, or is there a better way to handle the iOS upgrade and unlock process?

To unlock an iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 with baseband 05.14.02, you cannot use the standard ultrasn0w unlock directly because that baseband version is not supported. The historical method to bypass this was to update the device to the 06.15.00 iPad baseband using Redsn0w or PwnageTool, which then allowed ultrasn0w to work. You should be aware that installing the iPad baseband can cause loss of GPS functionality and may require custom firmware for future restores. If possible, requesting an official IMEI unlock from the original carrier is the most reliable and permanent solution that avoids these technical risks.
