I have an old iPhone 3GS currently running iOS 3.1.2 and I would like to update it. Now that newer firmware versions have been released, is it still possible to install iOS 5.1.1 on this device?

Apple generally stops signing older firmware versions shortly after a newer version is released. This means you can usually only update to the latest version currently supported by your hardware. For the iPhone 3GS, the final supported version is iOS 6.1.6. If you specifically want to install iOS 5.1.1, you must have saved SHSH blobs for that version while it was still being signed by Apple. If your device was jailbroken in the past, Cydia might have saved these blobs for you. Without those saved signatures, you will be required to update to the latest compatible version instead.
