I have an iPhone 3GS that was jailbroken on iOS 4.1. I want to upgrade to iOS 5.x or later because many apps now require a newer firmware version. My device has the 06.15.00 modem firmware and the old bootrom. Please guide me on how to update to a newer iOS version while maintaining my jailbreak.

Because you have an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom, you have a unique advantage. You can upgrade to the latest supported firmware, which is iOS 6.1.6, and maintain a permanent untethered jailbreak. To do this, you should first use a tool like Redsn0w to restore to the latest firmware. Since you are currently on the 06.15.00 iPad baseband, I highly recommend using Redsn0w to downgrade your baseband back to a standard version. This will fix your GPS functionality and improve overall system stability. Once updated to iOS 6.1.6, you can jailbreak using p0sixspwn for a stable untethered experience. This provides a much better experience than iOS 5.x.
