If you see SOS or SOS only in your iPhone status bar, it means your device is not connected to your cellular network, but you can still make emergency calls through other carrier networks. This usually occurs when you are in an area with poor coverage from your specific provider. On iPhone 14 models or later, you may also see a satellite icon if you are outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, allowing you to text emergency services via satellite.
If you are in an area where you should have service, try toggling Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds and then off again to reset the connection. You can also check Settings, Cellular to ensure your cellular data is active.
To use the Emergency SOS feature on an iPhone 8 or later, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the Emergency Call slider appears. Drag the slider to call emergency services. If you continue holding the buttons, a countdown will begin and your iPhone will automatically call for help.
