I have an iPhone 3GS that was jailbroken a year ago and is currently running iOS 4.1. I want to upgrade to iOS 6.1.6, but I need to maintain my 05.13.04 baseband for unlocking purposes. My device details are Version 4.1 (8B117), Model MB715LL, and Modem Firmware 05.13.04. How can I safely update without losing my baseband? To upgrade your iPhone 3GS to iOS 6.1.6 while preserving the unlockable 05.13.04 baseband, you must use a custom IPSW. A standard update or restore through iTunes will update your baseband, which may prevent you from using your preferred carrier. Use a tool like Redsn0w to create a custom firmware file that excludes the baseband update. Once you have created the custom IPSW, use Redsn0w to put your device into Pwned DFU mode. Then, open iTunes and perform a Shift-Restore (Windows) or Option-Restore (Mac) to select your custom IPSW. After the installation is complete, you can jailbreak the device using Redsn0w or p0sixspwn and then install ultrasn0w from Cydia to restore your carrier unlock.
