How to sign out of iCloud on a Mac

How do I log out of my Apple Account or Apple ID on my MacBook or desktop Mac? I want to remove my iCloud account from macOS.

To sign out of iCloud on a Mac, open System Settings, click your name at the top of the sidebar, scroll to the bottom of the Apple Account panel, and click Sign Out. macOS will ask whether to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac before completing the sign-out.
Full steps on macOS Ventura or later:
1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
2. Click your name (Apple Account) at the top of the sidebar.
3. Scroll down and click Sign Out.
4. Choose which iCloud data to keep a local copy of (Contacts, Calendars, Safari data, Keychain, etc.), then click Keep a Copy or Don't Keep a Copy.
5. Enter your Mac's administrator password if prompted to turn off Find My, then click Continue.
On macOS Monterey or earlier, the path is System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview > Sign Out.
Before signing out, make sure any work in iCloud Drive has finished syncing, since files stored only in iCloud will be removed from the Mac unless you choose to keep a local copy. If Screen Time is enabled with a passcode, you'll need that passcode to complete sign-out. If the Sign Out button is grayed out, your Mac is managed by an MDM profile or a Screen Time content restriction is blocking account changes.
Signing out removes iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Photos, and Find My from this Mac, but does not delete your Apple Account or affect your data on other devices.
